This role offers an exciting opportunity of hybrid working, with regional travel across our fantastic sites on a regular basis.

 

Responsibilities

The Opportunity

 

Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering & Maintenance, as our Principal Electrical Engineer you will be highly experienced, technically adept and will sit amongst our fantastic Engineering team.

 

You will be supporting our Operations and Maintenance business unit, to provide leadership, technical direction, and engineering governance across a portfolio of state of the art Energy from Waste (EfW) power plants within the UK.

 

This role is critical in ensuring the safe, reliable, compliant and efficient operation of electrical systems across our Energy from Waste (EfW) power plants.

 

You will be acting as the regional authority on electrical engineering matters and play a strategic role in CAPEX/OPEX planning, compliance, asset performance improvement, and innovation.

 

What we need from you…

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities of the role

 

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for electrical engineering across all UK regional power plant assets.
  • Develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, design criteria, and best practices.
  • Support site engineering teams on complex technical issues and root cause analysis (RCA) and continuous improvement (CI).
  • Actively support strategic maintenance strategies including RCM and CBM to achieve company set KPI’s, goals and objectives.

 

Project Oversight & Asset Management

  • Oversee and review the design, specification, installation, and commissioning of new electrical systems or upgrades.
  • Support CAPEX project development including feasibility, cost estimation, and risk analysis.
  • Evaluate asset performance and propose improvement initiatives to increase reliability and efficiency.

 

Regulatory & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with UK legislation, grid codes (e.g. National Grid ESO, G99), and industry standards (e.g. BS7671, IEC, IEEE).
  • Support functional safety, arc flash studies, switching schedules, and electrical safety programs across sites.
  • Lead and contribute to HAZOPs, design reviews, and technical audits.
  • Assist with HV SAP authorisation boards and electrical competence tests

 

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with external consultants, DNOs/TSOs, OEMs, and regulators.
  • Liaise with internal departments outside of O&M, such as business development, construction, asset management, HSEQ, procurement, finance, etc.
  • Provide technical reporting and recommendations to senior management and investors.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and site-based teams.

 

Strategic & Innovation Contributions

  • Contribute to the company’s decarbonisation, grid flexibility, and digitalisation strategies.
  • Contribute to our understanding, evaluation and potential to integrate new technologies including carbon capture; district heating, battery storage, hydrogen storage and usage and smart grid solutions.

 

Qualifications

Education, Experience & Skills

 

Qualifications (Required)

  • BEng or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) status (or working towards) with full IET membership or equivalent.

 

Experience (Required)

  • 10+ years of electrical engineering experience within power generation, including low-voltage (<1kV) and high-voltage systems (>1kV – 132kV).
  • Proven experience with maintenance, design, and upgrade of (steam turbine) generators, LV and HV switchgear, protection systems, and control systems.
  • Practical experience of HV switching and HV transformer step-change control.
  • Strong understanding of UK power market regulations, connection agreements, and safety case development.
  • Well versed on the principles and application of Safety Rules (Power / EfW)

 

Skills (Required)

  • Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in electrical modelling tools (e.g. ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory).
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and prioritise region-wide initiatives.

 

Desirable aspects of the role include:

  • Knowledge of renewable integration (CCUS), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and DH schemes/CHP.
  • Experience with grid connection studies and G99/G100 applications.
  • Familiarity with ISO 55000 (Asset Management) or PAS 55.Previous experience gained from the EfW sector.
  • Achieved Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status on LV and HV systems.
  • Experience of Valmet Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
